Shop worker dies during ‘violent robbery’ at newsagent’s amid spate of UK stabbings
A shop worker has died during a “violent robbery” at a newsagent’s amid a spate of stabbings across the country.
A murder investigation has been launched after police were called to the store in Pinner, northwest London, at about 6am on Sunday.
The victim was found with stab injuries and was pronounced dead 45 minutes later.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “At this early stage it appears the victim was attacked by a man who carried out a robbery at the shop.
“It is thought that the victim worked at the newsagent and was opening the shop at the time of the attack.”
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Stancombe described the incident as a “violent robbery that has escalated” and said police are searching for a till stolen during the raid that may have been discarded.
He also urged anyone who saw a black Vauxhall Astra that was driven away at speed after the attack to come forward.
The victim has not yet been identified, and no one has been arrested in connection with the incident in Marsh Road.
The fatal incident came as the Metropolitan Police confirmed five other people had been stabbed – including a 13-year-old boy – in separate incidents across the capital over 12 hours.
The teenager was taken to hospital after being stabbed in Brixton, south London, shortly before midnight.
The Met Police said his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
A man in his 40s is in critical condition after being stabbed in Hackney, east London at about 3.15am, while two 18-year-old men suffered knife wounds in Westminster, central London, at 10.30pm on Saturday.
A 23-year-old man was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after he was stabbed in Barkingside, northeast London, shortly before 8.30pm on Saturday.
It comes after a 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death in Isleworth, west London, after being attacked by a masked man on Friday night.
Elsewhere, eight people have been arrested after a man in his 30s died from knife wounds in Wells in Somerset.
Police were called to reports of a disturbance at a property involving several people on Saturday afternoon and found two men with stab injuries.
One of the men died, while the other – who is also in his 30s – is being treated in hospital.
Six men and two women from the Somerset area have been arrested over the incident and remain in custody.
At least 44 people are now known to have been stabbed to death across the UK so far this year.
