Sophie visited RAF Wittering yesterday to watch competitors taking part in the Wessex Cup, a yearly tournament which sees her regiments and military organisations compete against each other in a series of challenges. For the engagement, she donned a very casual look with a camouflage jacket and khaki trousers.
During the outing, she watched the games taking place and even showed off her gaming skills as she had a go at rally simulator Dirt Rally 2.
The Countess normally attends the Wessex Cup – which before yesterday it had been last held in 2019.
Last year, the tournament had to be cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Her day out was a hit among royal fans, who heaped praises for her on social media.
One enthused about Sophie’s role within the Royal Family, saying: “What an asset and wonderful lady, the Countess of Wessex is!”
Another said: “She rocks! I really like her.”
A third added: “Have so much respect for the Countess”.
A fourth wrote: “She looks fantastic.”
And another said: “What a lovely surprise for the brilliant RAF”
The Countess has a close link to the military base, as she has been holding the honorary title of Air Commodore of Royal Air Force Wittering since 2008.
Sophie holds other military appointments, including the one of Royal Colonel of 5th Battalion The Rifles.
The Countess of Wessex is also Colonel-in-Chief of the Corps of Army Music and of Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps.
Moreover, in 2006 she was appointed Sponsor of HMS Daring.
Sophie also holds two military positions in Canada, being the Colonel-in-Chief of The South Alberta Light Horse and Colonel-in-Chief of the Lincoln and Well and Regiment.
Sophie is one of the 11 working members of the Royal Family the Queen can count on to represent the Crown.
She joined the Firm in 1999 upon marrying Prince Edward and, after leaving her job in PR, started working full-time for the Crown.
Since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their decision to step down from their royal roles in January 2020, Sophie and Edward have become more prominent in the public eye and were tipped by some experts to be among the people to take up some of Meghan and Harry’s royal work.
However, in an interview with the Sunday Times last summer, Sophie said: “I am pretty busy already, so I’m not sure how much more I can do.
“There are only so many hours in the day.
“People may pay more attention to what I am doing, but I remain as busy as I have ever been.”
Over the past years, Sophie is also believed to have become increasingly close to the Queen.
According to an insider, the Queen favours Sophie when she needs to pick a person to accompany her to church while at Sandringham or Balmoral because she finds the Countess’ presence “soothing”.
The source told The Sun: “She is trusted and relied on by the Queen in a way I couldn’t say applied to the Duchess of Cambridge or the Duchess of Cornwall.
“She is like another daughter to Her Majesty, they are that close.”
