‘She always loses!’ Sturgeon mocked as Scottish Tory leader savages SNP referendum defeats

Scottish Tory leader Jackson Carlaw savaged First Minister Nicola Sturgeon after she insisted on two referendums in the next 12 months. Ms Sturgeon wants to impose votes on overturning the Brexit result, as well as on Scottish independence during 2020. Mr Carlaw poked fun at the SNP leader’s record on referendums, noting that ”she always loses them”.

Ms Sturgeon lost both the Brexit referendum, when she campaigned to Remain, and the Scottish Independence vote.

Quizzed at the First Minister’s Questions in Holyrood yesterday, the SNP leader admitted her priority was a second independence vote over a second Brexit referendum.

If Labour wins the next general election, the First Minister revealed that she wants a second independence referendum held before a second Brexit vote.

Mr Carlaw asked: “I’m just not sure the First Minister has thought through her big double referendum promise.”

The Scottish Tory leader continued: “As she keeps telling us, she would ask Jeremy Corbyn for a referendum on independence and demand it’s held next year.

“And we know too that she would support Mr Corbyn’s plan for a second Brexit referendum also to be held next year.

“Now First Minister, clarify for me a simple question on timetabling.

“When is all this supposed to happen? Both referendums on the one day or different days? Which vote would come first – IndyRef, EuroRef – which?”

When Mrs Sturgeon admitted her priority was independence over the UK remaining in the EU, Mr Carlaw fired back.

He said: “You heard it from the First Minister there – her priority used to be education, now it’s independence.

“Not only is she going to demand a second independence referendum as well as supporting a second Brexit referendum, she’s also telling people she’s going to help from what she grandly describes as a progressive alliance.

“That’s the same UK she hopes to leave weeks later. I’m intrigued, can the First Minister explain how you form an alliance with the same people you’re going to walk out on weeks later?”

Ms Sturgeon’s admission prompted the Scottish Tories to warn Remain-supporting Unionists the SNP would betray them.

Mr Carlaw said: “She’ll use your vote, and it’ll be an independence referendum she’ll be promoting first, second and last.

“With Labour committed to a June re-run for the EU question, Nicola Sturgeon’s plan would mean an independence referendum within six months.

“Nicola Sturgeon has spent years telling voters in Scotland that she wants to wait to see how Brexit plays out before calling another independence referendum.

“Yet now she wants to hold that vote first, before Labour’s second EU referendum would take place. It’s a shambolic logic.”
