Piers Morgan, who quit Good Morning Britain last week over his criticism of Meghan Markle, sparked a fierce reaction from royal fans for sharing a photoshopped image of the Queen. The picture, which the journalist states he did not produce, shows the monarch beaming as she holds open Mr Morgan’s new book on woke culture, titled ‘Wake Up’. The presenter has been condemned for sharing the image, with social media users accusing Mr Morgan of hypocrisy and peddling “an outright lie”.

Mr Morgan shared the image of the Queen over the weekend and claimed Sarah Ferguson and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, have already read his book, which was first published in October.

He wrote on Twitter: “I don’t know who did this but I love it…. and there has to be an outside chance Her Majesty has had a sneak peak, as I know other Royals like Camilla & Fergie have read it.

“If you haven’t yet, and you care about free speech, get your order in! Link in bio. #WakeUp”

However, royal fans were quick to call out the presenter for being “disrespectful”.

One user said: “Cashing in the royals whilst dissing on them… Shame on you!”

Another person said: “Do you not find that disrespectful, using a mocked up picture of the Queen to push your book sales.

“Particularly when you were so concerned about her worried over Prince Philip in hospital.”

A third person wrote: “So damaging our Royal Family in a TV interview is bad, but using them to flog your books is ok.

“Disrespectful to the Queen. Can’t believe you shared this when her 99 year old husband lies on hospital.”

The last comment, which references Prince Philip’s month-long stay in hospital, is a frequent theme among social media users and comes after Mr Morgan blasted the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for airing their tell-all interview while the Duke of Edinburgh was unwell.

He said last week: “I think the damage she has done to the British monarchy and to the queen, at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital, is enormous and frankly contemptible.”

In response, one person said: “Ising the Queen to promote your book? Outrageous!

“She has already suffered so much these last couple of days.

“How can you insult the Royal Family like this. Shame on @piersmorgan.”

Another person wrote: “But it’s an outright lie and disrespectful to your 94 year old monarch who is having to cope with her 99 year old husband being seriously ill.”

Earlier today Prince Philip was discharged from hospital after being first admitted to the private King Edward VII’s hospital in Marylebone on February 16.

The Duke later underwent a successful procedure for a pre-existing heart condition at another hospital, the specialist St Bartholomew’s just miles down the road.

As the Duke left hospital on Tuesday, Buckingham Palace issued a statement confirming his exit.

The statement said: “The Duke of Edinburgh has today been discharged from King Edward VII’s hospital and has returned to Windsor Castle, following treatment for an infection and a successful procedure for a preexisting condition.

“His Royal Highness wishes to thank all the medical staff who looked after him at both kind Edward VII’s hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, and everyone who has sent their good wishes.”

‘Wake Up: Why the world has gone nuts’ by Piers Morgan (HarperCollins, £20) is out now.
