Sexism on the road – Women fear driving at night and face insults, poll found

And 50 percent feel uncomfortable walking to and from their vehicle after dark. A further 15 percent said the thought of refuelling at an empty forecourt at night terrifies them. Men are a menace on the road, said the survey – 44 percent of women motorists have had sexist insults shouted at them. Nearly a third have experienced drivers revving their engine intimidatingly while waiting side-by-side at traffic lights.

And 14 percent revealed their car had been followed by a driver who caught their eye at the lights, while the same number have had another motorist try to get them to open their door.

A fifth of the 1,500 polled said they have been the victim of violence or theft while driving.

To escape danger a large proportion of women admit to driving faster than they should to get home quicker and they lock doors at traffic lights in case someone tries to get into the car.

The survey found the average woman driver faces sexism on the road at least three times a month. William Bannister, of Motor Fuel Group, which carried out the poll, said: “Women feel vulnerable when driving, particularly at night. It is a trend amplified as the winter nights draw in.”
