'Several stabbed' in Glasgow city centre as police declare major incident

Roads in Glasgow city centre have been closed following unconfirmed reports of multiple people being stabbed, including a police officer.

Around 20 police vehicles have been sent to West George Street along with sniffer dogs, armed officers, forensic officers and paramedics wearing protective clothing.

Authorities have so far said they are responding to a ‘serious police incident’ but local journalists at the scene have referred to reports of ‘multiple stabbings’. Witnesses have said they have seen people covered in blood, one telling Sky News she saw at least three people being injured.

Queen Elizabeth University Hospital is ‘braced for a major incident’, reports Glasgow Live. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: ‘Please follow advice to avoid the West George Street area of Glasgow while @policescotland deal with this ongoing incident.’

Greater Glasgow Police tweeted: ‘Emergency services are currently dealing with an incident on West George Street in Glasgow.

‘The street is currently closed off and the public are asked to avoid the area at present.

‘The situation is contained at this time and there is no danger to the general public.’

In a statement the Scottish Police Federation said: ‘We are aware of reports a police officer has been stabbed in an incident in #Glasgow city centre.

‘Our officials are in attendance to provide all necessary support. Please allow our colleagues the space to do their jobs.

‘Further updates will be provided when we are able to do so.’
