Sophie celebrated her 57th birthday on Thursday, and the royal spent the morning volunteering at an NHS vaccination centre. The Countess greeted and looked after people receiving their jabs alongside fellow volunteers from St John Ambulance.

She became Grand President of the first-aid charity in 2004 and heads up the work of St John’s County Presidents who provide a variety of support to their local St John volunteers.

Last year she completed training to become a Care Volunteer in support of the NHS Vaccination programme.

She is one of 12,000 volunteers in NHS vaccination centres all over the UK.

In photos released by Buckingham Palace, Sophie could be seen greeting patients and taking their details ahead of their Covid vaccination.

Tweeting about the Countess’s birthday outing, ITV’s royal editor praised her “no fuss” ways.

Mr Ship tweeted: “The Countess of Wessex, who always get on with her job with little fuss, has been pictured today (her birthday) volunteering at an NHS vaccination centre in Surrey.

Sophie has trained previously as a care volunteer and is also Grand President of @stjohnambulance.”

Some snaps also show Her Royal Highness working alongside other volunteers from St John Ambulance to look after the wellbeing of those getting their jabs.

After her shift, the royal mum-of-two was presented with a pin that is given to all St John Ambulance personnel to thank them for their support with the vaccination programme.

Snaps show the Countess proudly pinning the badge onto her shirt while her co-workers clapped.

Sophie was also given a sweet surprise from her fellow volunteers, as they presented her with a bouquet of flowers to mark her birthday.

Her Royal Highness showed her support for the charity’s work in 2020 too when she visited St John Ambulance’s Operational Support Hub in Gosport.

Sophie joined volunteers organising new deliveries and packing PPE shipments for ambulance crews, specialist cleaners, hospital staff and first aiders.

Also in September last year, the Countess was honoured for her service to St John Ambulance in a special ceremony.

She was presented with a Bar to the Service Medal to celebrate working with the organisation for 15 years.

The Countess, who is reportedly deemed the Queen’s “favourite”, also had her birthday publicly marked by the monarch.

The Royal Family Twitter account, which represents the Queen and all working royals who don’t have their own social media handle, published a message sharing well wishes.

It reads: “Wishing The Countess of Wessex a very Happy Birthday today!”

The caption was accompanied by a sweet photograph of the Countess holding a puppy taken in November last year when Sophie was visiting the Guide Dogs National Centre in Leamington Spa.

Sophie married the Queen’s son Prince Edward in 1999, and since then she’s been described as one of the Queen’s favourite members of the Royal Family.

One courtier previously told The Sun: “If you’re asking who is Her Majesty’s favourite child, it’s none of them, it’s her daughter-in-law.”

During her time as a royal, the Countess has reportedly been able to gain the trust and affection of the monarch and become one of her closest confidantes.

She, her husband and their two children James, Viscount Severn, 14, and Lady Louise, 18, often visit the Queen when she is in residence at Windsor Castle.

The Wessexes live at Bagshot Park in Surrey, just a short distance away from the Queen’s Berkshire home.
