Jack Greenhalgh, 11, noticed the ATM churn out notes at the large supermarket in Salford, Greater Manchester. Rather than pocket any of the cash, the quick-thinking youngster alerted a nearby cleaner and a security guard,  who had been keeping an eye out after a customer said her money hadn’t come out of the machine.

And the woman has since been reunited with her cash, reports Manchester Evening News.

Jack, from Salford, said: “I’m not stupid and I wouldn’t just take money like that. It’s just wrong. This person has got a lot of money out and it could be their life savings.

“I’m not that kind of person to do theft.”

Asda rewarded the boy with a £10 supermarket gift voucher and Jack has already spent it on a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, some football cones, a drink, some sweets and a bar of a chocolate for his grandad Jack, who helped him during lockdown.

Donna, Jack’s mum, said she was very proud of her son.

She added: “He rang me and said he’d found a lot of money, I said ‘what do you mean?’ He told me what had happened and that he’d handed it in, I said ‘that’s brilliant’.

“If he’d have come home with it, it just wouldn’t have been right. He wouldn’t have slept anyway. That’s the kind of kid he is, he wears his heart on his sleeve.

“It could have belonged to an old lady, or an old man and it could have been anything – a child’s birthday or Christmas money.

“I’m proud of him for doing the right thing.”

Jack had been at Asda with a friend who was using the adjacent ATM when the cash machine spat out the money.

“I thought is this some sort of magic ATM or something,” the schoolboy said.

“It just started beeping and all of a sudden lots of money started coming out.

“A cleaner was near the lift so I told her and then a security guard came down from the next floor.”
