See ya Swinson! Nicola Sturgeon can’t hide her delight as Lib Dem leader loses seat

Nicola Sturgeon was captured punching the air and celebrating on hearing the news that Jo Swinson, the Lib Dem leader, had lost her seat to the SNP. Ms Swinson lost the vote by less than 150 votes, losing her Dumbartonshire East seat to the SNP.

A Sky News broadcast captured Ms Sturgeon cheering and punching her hands in the air when she realised her party had won the seat.

Despite her celebrations, she did, in an interview with Sky, say she “feels for” Ms Swinson on a personal level.

She added that she was “bitterly disappointed” at the result that was unfolding around the UK.

She said: “I think Tory governments are bad for the UK, more than they’re bad for Scotland, and I really don’t want the UK to leave the European Union.

“But I’ve got to accept that England appears to have voted in a particular way, they appear to have voted for a Conservative government and appear to have voted to endorse the UK leaving the European Union.

“So Boris Johnson may have a mandate to take England out of the European Union, but he emphatically does not have a mandate to take Scotland out of the European Union.

“And Scotland must have the choice over our own future because it can’t be any clearer than it has been made in this election today that Scotland doesn’t want a five year Boris Johnson government and doesn’t want to lose our status as a European nation.”

Ms Swinson’s so-called “Remain Alliance” never took off, despite her attempt at galavanting the support of Remain voters across the country.

The Lib Dems made it party policy that should they win a majority in Parliament, they would revoke Article 50.

In recent weeks, Ms Swinson cast doubt on her policy, admitting that she thought a second referendum would be the best way to stop Brexit.

Speaking at the count after her loss, Ms Swinson said: “Some will be celebrating the wave of nationalism that is sweeping on both sides of the border.

“And I do congratulate all those who are newly elected.

“These are very significant results for the future of our country and I will be making further remarks later today.”

She thanked those in the crowd who had voted Lib Dem for their support, giving thanks to several others before welcoming the SNP’s Amy Callaghan to the stage.

She said: “It is an amazing job, I’m sure you will love doing it and I wish you well and what you said about young women and smashing boundaries I wholeheartedly agree.”

The SNP has enjoyed a strong night, with Ms Sturgeon saying Scotland and the UK are now on “divergent paths”.

She said the political situation with a Boris Johnson Government was “pretty grim”.

She also said she would continue in her move towards reigniting another Scottish referendum next year.
