Second person arrested over murder of girl, 2

A woman has been arrested by police investigating the murder of a two-year-old girl.

The toddler, named as Ali Jayden Maguire, died in hospital on Friday night.

She is said to have suffered head injuries at a property in Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland.

The suspect, 24, has been detained on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, causing or permitting the death of a child, and child cruelty.

She was arrested by detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s major investigation team and currently remains in custody.

The woman is the second person to be arrested in the investigation – as police were given extra time to question a man, 32, detained on suspicion of Ali’s death.

The man was arrested hours after the toddler, known as AJ, was taken to hospital from a house in Park Avenue, Dungannon.

The toddler’s mum is originally from Dublin and recently moved to the area.

Family and friends left tributes including ornaments and cuddly toys, together with messages of sympathy and flowers outside the property where AJ was found to be seriously hurt.

Forensic officers and the PSNI remained at the scene on Sunday morning.

Her aunt, named only as Cuirnan, thanked the public for their messages of sympathy in recent days via a Facebook post.

In a statement, the PSNI said: ‘Detectives from Police Service of Northern Ireland’s major investigation team investigating the circumstances of the death of a two-year-old girl on Friday August 6 have been granted a court extension for an additional 36 hours to question a 32-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder.’

Former DUP leader and MLA for Fermanagh and South Tyrone, Arlene Foster, tweeted: ‘Another tragic death in the constituency, this time a little girl.

‘Thinking of all those dealing with this awful event, and trying to make sense of it all.’
