Search for crying German fan trolled by Brits after £11,000 raised for her

A Welshman is searching for a young German fan who cried during her country’s defeat to England in the Euros after raising thousands of pounds for her.

The girl was mocked on social media after her side lost 2-0 to the Three Lions and crashed out of the European Championships.

Crowds cheered inside Wembley Stadium when her image was streamed across the big screen during the last 16 clash on Tuesday.

Former footballers Stan Collymore and Gary Lineker later condemned the abuse on Twitter.

Welshman Joel Hughes saw Collymore’s message and decided to create a JustGiving page for the youngster to show ‘not everyone from the UK is horrible’.

He gave an update on Friday morning, adding: ‘Morning all, again, thanks for the awesome support! I’ve not contacted the parents yet but have had some strong leads & am in connection with some German journalists.

‘I’m going to come up with a cut off date after which this campaign will end. Then, if I’m in contact with the family, they shall get all the funds.

‘If not, all funds will go to a suitable charity. I would prefer the former but hey ho – having some good come out of this is the main point. Joel x’

Mr Hughes initially asked for £500 to treat the child, but the appeal has since smashed that amount.

He told Nation Cymru: ‘I saw a tweet from Stan Collymore highlighting the abuse the little girl was getting.

‘I can’t stand seeing that kind of bullying online.’

Mr Hughes said he started the crowdfunding appeal because he wanted to ‘put a smile on that girl’s face’

He wrote on the JustGiving page: ‘Yes, there are more people affected by this than just this little girl but hey, this is just meant to be a token of goodwill.

‘Yes there are other potential good causes – but I’ve picked this.

‘I’d like to think that the parents of the little girl will spend this on a nice treat for her so that she knows that not everyone from the UK is horrible and that we care.

‘No, I don’t think this will change the world. But it can do one thing for that little girl.

‘No, I don’t know who the girl is (yet) but I know social media can sort that out. :)’
