Seals, dolphins and vistas – our very best alfresco watering holes

This hot weather may prove to be thirsty work for Ireland’s employees with beer gardens across the country filling up when the work week has finished.

The following is an unofficial guide to some of the best places in Ireland to enjoy a drink while the sun shines.

Joe May’s pub – Skerries

The quintessential old school seafarer’s pub overlooking the harbour in the picturesque seaside town in north county Dublin draws hordes of locals and visitors alike when the sun shines.

Patrons can spot seals in the bay as the sun sets over the harbour if they can snag a coveted bar stool or seat on the pavement bench outside.

Waterside Hotel – Donabate

The hotel boasts one of the few beachside patios in Dublin.

The large outside terrace looks directly on to the sea, with stunning views of Lambay Island, Portrane and the north Co Dublin coastline.

The Barge pub – Ranelagh

The Charlemont Street pub and bistro bills itself as “an institution in Dublin, well known for impromptu parties when the sun shines”.

Who can argue when hordes of sun worshippers line the banks of the Grand Canal for after-work wind-down sessions in the sun?

The Blue Light – Sandyford

This old school pub was one of six shebeens going back hundreds of years and its beer garden offers one of the best views of Dublin Bay and the Dublin and Wicklow mountains from its lofty location above the city in Barnacullia.

MV Cill Airne – Dublin Docklands

The former passenger liner boat has been beautifully restored and transformed into a floating restaurant and bar docked on the North Wall Quay.

Its stunning outdoor deck is the perfect location for alfresco eating and drinking overlooking the River Liffey.

Curragower Bar – Limerick

The pub and restaurant boasts in the heart of the city’s medieval quarter boasts a beer garden overlooking the River Shannon with stunning views of Limerick castle across the river.

Ging’s Riverside Bar – Carrick-on-Shannon

The circa-1880 pub has umbrella-covered picnic tables set on manicured lawns and stone patios overlooking the river. It is regarded locally as having one of the best beer gardens in Ireland.

Beachcomber Bar – Rathmullan, Co Donegal

The large lakeside beer garden in the popular north Donegal resort offers panoramic views of Lough Swilly.

Tigh Ned, Inis Oirr – Aran Islands

This family run pub located on the smallest of the Aran Islands offers stone and picnic tables enclosed by low stone walls with stunning seaside views.

O’Carroll’s Cove Beachside bar and restaurant – Ring of Kerry

The family run establishment near Caherdaniel is situated on the white sandy beach of this stunning cove, featuring dolphins and seals cavorting in the turquoise-coloured water. It all feels more like California than a resort on the Wild Atlantic Way.
