Screaming families flee Manchester's Winter Funland after seating collapses

Three people have been injured after seating collapsed during a circus performance at Winter Funland in Greater Manchester.

People could be heard ‘screaming and crying’ as police arrived to evacuate the premise in Trafford.

Witnesses say families fled the scene in terror after hearing a ‘massive bang’.

Event organisers say three people were assisted by the onsite medical team but no one required hospitalisation.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed they were called to the scene of a ‘potential seating collapse’ shortly after 6pm.

James Moakes and his partner Sofia Gomes were at the circus show with their young daughters when the collapse happened.

They told a Manchester Evening News Reporter: ‘At first we thought it was noise to do with the performance.

‘We saw an entire bench fall down and that’s when it started. A section of the seating collapsed on itself. It was about 20 seats. People were panicking.

‘The lights went off and no one knew what to do.  Everything fell forward, we felt the floor vibrating. The floor trembled.

‘We saw the bench collapse in on itself. We heard screaming and panicking, there were a lot of children. It was quite scary at the time.

‘A few children were in tears, there were distraught.’

In a statement on Facebook, Winter Funland said they would begin an investigation with health and safety officers.

It said: ‘Winter Funland will be open tomorrow Sunday 15th December for all attractions with the exception of the circus and Christmas show whilst we carry out full safety checks, our first priority is customer safety we thank everyone for their understanding.’

But one concerned parent has warned others on twitter not to take their children.
