Scotland voted to remain part of Britain in 2014 by 55 percent of the vote to 45 percent. However the SNP are demanding another poll after next month’s Scottish Parliament elections.

On Tuesday Ms Sturgeon tweeted in support of a second referendum commenting: “At stake here is a simple democratic principle that can unite those for and against independence – it is Scotland’s right to decide.

“The arrogant assertion that the Tories get to decide for us – no matter how Scotland votes – should be given short shrift by every democrat.”

However the Scottish Tory leader in Holyrood hit back stating: “Scotland did decide.

“We voted to stay in the UK.”

Ms Davidson’s tweet received more than 7,300 likes and 1,100 retweets.

Before the 2014 referendum took place Ms Sturgeon described it as a “once in a lifetime opportunity”.

Other senior SNP figures said the independence vote would be “once in a generation”.

Boris Johnson has seized on these comments to support his position on blocking another vote.

The Prime Minister is insisting Ms Sturgeon focus on Scotland’s coronavirus recovery rather than breaking up the UK.

Ms Davidson served as Scottish Conservative leader from November 2011 until August 2019.

She was replaced by Douglas Ross, but as he sits in Westminster she continued to lead the Conservatives in the Scottish Parliament.

Following May’s election Ms Davidson is expected to enter the House of Lords as a life peer.

Separately Ms Sturgeon has come under fire for refusing to admit being part of the UK spread up Scotland’s coronavirus rollout.

Over half the British population has received at least one vaccine, a figure higher than for any EU member state.

By comparison France has given a vaccine to 16 percent of its population and Germany 15 percent.

The Government decided to keep Britain out of the EU’s vaccine procurement programme which ran into serious difficulty.

The move was opposed at the time by the SNP’s constitutional secretary Mike Russell.

He commented: “This idiotic refusal is all about Brexit and nothing to do with the pandemic. It will cost lives.”

Ms Sturgeon caused controversy by claiming there is “absolutely no evidential basis” to claim Scotland would have vaccinated fewer people outside the UK.

However this was dismissed as “delusional nonsense” by Donald Cameron, the Scottish Conservative health spokesman.

He said: “Nicola Sturgeon cannot accept the obvious truth about our world-leading vaccination programme, which is saving countless lives, because of her bitter and blind hostility to the United Kingdom.

“More than 2.7million Scots have had their first jag which should be a cause for celebration but instead Sturgeon gives a churlish response with zero evidence to support her wild claim that an independent Scotland would have done just as well.”
