Pictures showed pupils being evacuated from St Paul’s Catholic High School in Wythenshawe this afternoon, the Manchester Evening News reported. The huge emergency services presence ran along Firbank Road in the Newall Green area of the city.

In a tweet, a GMP spokesperson said the school had been “evacuated as a precaution”.

It added: “We’re assisting colleagues from @NWAmbulance and @manchesterfire following a report of a gas leak at a school today on Firbank Road in Manchester.

“Road closures are in place and the school has been evacuated as a precaution.

“No one is reported injured at this time.”

A spokesperson for St. Paul’s Catholic High School said: “Earlier this afternoon the school was evacuated as a precaution due to the suspected discharge of an aerosol in one area of the school.

“The emergency services were called by the school to support the efforts being made to ensure the wellbeing of our pupils.

“All pupils have been accounted for and responded to the situation in a very mature way.

“Parents have been notified about this incident via email and text message, but, there is currently no need to collect their child early from school.”
