School on lockdown with children told to stay inside as armed police swarm area

Armed police put a school in Derbyshire on lockdown this morning as they stormed a nearby home.

Police were called to reports of a ‘man with a firearm’ at around 7.45am and said officers have now arrested a man, 49, who is in police custody.

Staff were told to keep children inside at Wilsthorpe School as officers and paramedics closed roads surrounding Briar Gate in Long Eaton as they spoke to the man inside.

A police spokesman said: ‘Armed officers were deployed to the scene along with negotiators.’

They added: ‘There have been rumours in the area that gun shots were fired, we can confirm that no shots were fired by officers or by the man under arrest.’

A mother waiting for a bus near the cordon earlier told Derbyshire Live: ‘I’ve just seen armed police holding a gun at someone or a car.

‘It scared me and my daughter. I’ve asked police if we are safe and they told me as long as we keep away from the cordon.’

Another local resident added: ‘There’s police everywhere. I think they’ve been here all night but I don’t know why. It must be something serious.’

A message sent to parents of children at Wilsthorpe School said: ‘There is an ongoing police incident in Long Eaton.

‘Students will be kept inside the school building behind the secure line until we receive further information. Please do not visit the school.’

A spokesman for Harrington Junior School, which is on the same site, confirmed its pupils were safe, saying: ‘We are still open. We have got the children.’

Long Eaton is a town with a population of about 38,000 in the Erewash district of Derbyshire, located about halfway between Nottingham and Derby.
