School in lockdown after 'person with gun makes threats online'

Armed police placed a school in lockdown after gun threats were made online.

Officers were alerted to a person claiming they had a firearm and were making threats against Golborne High School, near Wigan, on Monday morning.

The threats were made over the internet and no one with a firearm has been found in the area, police said.

Parents rushed to the site upon seeing reports something was happening on social media.

One told the Manchester Evening News: ‘I had no idea what was going on, I called them and got no response. It was scary.’

Police remained at the site for several hours as pupils were let out and sent home from class.

A Greater Manchester Police statement said: ‘At around 10.42am today (22 November 2021), police were called to reports that an individual was making threats to Golborne High School, Golborne, claiming they were in possession of a firearm.

‘Armed officers have been deployed to the scene and the school has been locked down as a precaution.

‘The threats were made over the internet and no-one has approached the area with a firearm.’

Wigan Council alerted parents to the news on Twitter.

‘We realise the details will cause concern. Officers are at the scene and an investigation is underway,’ the council said.
