School bus driver suffered 'event' at wheel before crash killed him and pupil

The driver of a school bus which overturned on the M53 motorway killing him and a 15-year-old girl suffered an ‘event’ at wheel.

Stephen Shrimpton, 40, 15-year-old Jessica Baker both died after the coach crashed whilst carrying pupils to school on the M53 near Liverpool on September 29.

Liverpool Coroner’s Court has heard Mr Shrimpton had suffered an ‘event’ before the fatal accident whilst he was driving.

Police have confirmed one boy, also aged 14, has suffered life-changing injuries.

Around 11 children were taken to surrounding hospitals to be treated for minor injuries, while the remaining 39 were discharged following medical assessments.

A witness described a number of kids in school uniform ‘escaping from the back window’ of the vehicle, which police say was carrying 54 passengers.
