This week, the Duchess of Sussex announced her debut novel, The Bench, will be released next month. The new book is reportedly inspired by Prince Harry and his relationship with his son, Archie.

Meghan came under fire after she used her ‘Duchess’ title in her new book with many urging the Queen to strip her of the title.

Now, the Duchess of York, who has written more than 70 books herself, said anyone who has managed to sit down and write a book should be “supported and respected”.

The Duchess of York said: “To sit down and work hard to write a book, in any genre, should be supported and respected.

“To encourage literacy in general, not just children’s books, is a love of mine and to encourage more women to delve into their creative selves and get a book out is very well done.”

The Duchess of York is well-known for having written more than 70 titles to her name and is set to release her first adult fiction novel called Her Heart For a Compass.

The new book was co-written with Marguerite Kaye.

On her latest book, Fergie said: “I have written 74 books over 30 years but this one is special as it was written during the pandemic and is my first ever historical novel, something I have been waiting to write for 15 years.”

Fergie’s book is inspired by her Scottish great-great-aunt, Lady Margaret Montagu Douglas Scott.

Speaking about the book, the Duchess said: “It all started with researching my ancestry.

“Digging into the history of the Montagu-Douglas Scotts, I first came across Lady Margaret, who intrigued me because she shared one of my given names.

“But although her parents, the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch, were close friends with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, I was unable to discover much about my namesake’s early life, and so was born the idea which became Her Hear for a Compass.

“With real historical events and facts to hand, my imagination took over.”

Announcing her new book, Meghan said it started as a poem she wrote for Harry on Father’s Day after Archie was born.

She continued: “That poem became this story.

“My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the make-up, as much as it does with mine.”

The book, which will be released by Random House Children’s Books, is illustrated by Christian Robinson.

Meghan has also narrated the audiobook version of the story.

A statement said: “Inspired by her own husband and son, the debut of The Duchess of Sussex poignantly captures the evolving and growing relationship between fathers and sons and reminds us of the many ways in which love can be shaped and expressed in a modern family.

“The Bench evokes a deep sense of warmth, connection and compassion and gives readers a glimpse into shared and enduring moments between a diverse group of fathers and sons – moments of peace and reflection, trust and faith, discovery and learning, and lasting comfort.”

Meghan and Fergie were seemingly close during the former Suits actress’s time as a member of the Royal Family.

During her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March, Meghan revealed it was the Duchess of York who taught her how to curtsy.

She told the media mogul: “Right in front of the house we practiced and ran in.

“Fergie ran out and said, ‘Do you know how to curtsy?’

“Apparently I did a very deep curtsy, I don’t remember it, and then we sat there and we chatted.”
