Sarah Ferguson vs Prince Philip: Real reason the pair fell out amid Prince Andrew divorce

Sarah Ferguson and Prince Philip have held a long-enduring feud within the Royal Family, as the former wife of Prince Andrew once made deadly mistakes while in the royal inner circle. Prince Philip recently refused to share Balmoral with the mother of Eugenie and Beatrice, cutting her summer holidays short. Royal commentators noted they “can’t be in the same room together”, and it was “a little bit awkward” for Sarah to leave. Their feud has deep roots stretching back some 20 years before the Duke and Duchess of York separated.

Why did Prince Philip and Sarah, Duchess of York, fall out?

Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew, the second son of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, divorced in 1996.

The decision to part ways came following reports of infidelity in the Duke and Duchess of York’s relationship.

These rumours were rife and came to a head in 1992, when a picture emerged of American businessman John Bryan sucking Sarah Ferguson’s toes.

When the photos surfaced, published on the front pages of UK newspapers, Prince Philip allegedly came to Sarah Ferguson and declared: “There but for the grace of God go I.”

Andrew and Sarah soon separated, and Sarah left the Royal Family inner circle.

In the years following, she existed in a royal limbo, where she retained her title but lost many of the luxuries of royal life.

She famously fell into financial difficulty, and sources claimed Prince Philip barred any help for the Duchess from royal resources.

While Prince Philip and Sarah Ferguson may still be feuding, her relationship with ex-husband Andrew remains strong.

Since their breakup more than 20 years ago, the couple has stayed close.

Their daughters kept them in close proximity, as they agreed to raise them together, and Sarah lived with her ex-husband until 2004.

They still make appearances together, and Fergie allegedly keeps a room at her Andrew’s home in Sunninghill Park.

Sarah Ferguson once declared Andrew would “always be my Prince” in 2013, and their parenting duties keep them tied.

She said: “He’s still my handsome prince, he’ll always be my handsome prince.

“We really believe in being good parents for our girls.

“In our every day, we really respect each other and we honour each other.”
