Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana’s “unique parallels” in their early lives are what drove them to be close friends, according to royal commentators. The royal women’s relationship was analysed by experts in a Channel 5 documentary: ‘Fergie Vs Diana: Royal Wives At War’. Commentators noted the vital role the Duchess of York played in helping the late Princess of Wales “find her feet” in the Royal Family.

Lizzie Cundy, a friend of Fergie, said: “As Diana embarked on her life as a princess, she came to rely on Fergie.

“Diana looked up to Sarah because she was so flamboyant.

“Sarah just seemed to be kind of like that older sister in a way.”

Psychologist and relationship coach, Jo Hemmings also gave insight into the nature of the relationship.

She said: “Fergie had so much more life experience than Diana.

“By the time she was in her 20s, she’d had two live-in relationships.

“One of them with a man who was 22 years older than her.

“So at that point, when Diana was very young, those two years must have seemed incredibly significant.”

Both the women had grown up in the royal circles.

Narrator Glynis Barber explained: “With the unique parallels of Sarah and Diana’s upbringings, and Sarah’s understanding of royal life, the pair soon became best friends.

“When Princess Diana married Prince Charles in 1981 in St Paul’s Cathedral, her new friend, Fergie, watched on.”

Vanity Fair Royal Editor Katie Nicholl added: “Sarah was actually a very important person in Diana’s life.

“Certainly in the run-up to the royal wedding.

“But also in those early years when she really helped Diana to find her feet, in a family that can be very difficult and unforgiving to navigate.”

Ms Cundy told Channel 5: “She was absolutely delighted for her friend.

“I think that’s why her and Diana became so close.”
