Sarah Ferguson heartbreak: Fergie shock over Prince Andrew marriage- ‘Why did he marry me’

Sarah Ferguson, 60, and Prince Andrew, 59, will watch their the eldest daughter Princess Beatrice, 31, tie the knot with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi next year. While the Duke and Duchess of York remain close they have been divorced for more than two decades. Years after their wedding Fergie reflected on why Andrew proposed to her at all.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson are on excellent terms despite no longer being an item.

Their marriage ended in spectacular fashion after Fergie was snapped having her toes sucked by her financial advisor while on holiday in France in 1992.

Soon after the photos emerged the Palace announced Fergie and Andrew’s separation, issuing a statement which read: “Last week, lawyers acting for the Duchess of York initiated discussions about a formal separation for the Duke and Duchess.

“These discussions are not yet completed and nothing will be said until they are.

“The Queen hopes that the media will spare the Duke and Duchess of York and their children any intrusion.”

Despite how things ended, the duo often attend events like Royal Ascot together to this day and have even spurred speculation they could remarry.

While Fergie has fervently dismissed speculation she and Andrew could get back together she has often opened up about their special friendship.

A testament to their great relationship was the joint statement they released following news of Prince Beatrice engagement.

The statement signed by Sarah and Andrew read: “The Duke and Duchess of York are delighted to announce the engagement of Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice of York to Mr. Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

“Her Royal Highness and Mr. Mapelli Mozzi became engaged while away for the weekend in Italy earlier this month.

“The wedding will take place in 2020. Further details will be announced in due course.

“The Duke and Duchess of York said, “We are thrilled that Beatrice and Edoardo have got engaged, having watched their relationship develop with pride.

“We are the lucky parents of a wonderful daughter who has found her love and companion in a completely devoted friend and loyal young man. We send them every good wish for a wonderful family future.”

While Fergie and Andrew still get on famously the flame-haired Duchess has previously open up about how she found the transition into royal life difficult.

Sarah Ferguson was 26 when she tied the knot with the Queen’s favourite son at Westminster Abbey on July 23 1986.

She was in royal terms a commoner without a nobel title and had first met Andrew through the Polo grounds her father managed.

While Fergie has said her intense love for the royal never wavered ahead of their wedding, she did question why it was her he chose to marry.

Years later she reflected: “Why did Prince Andrew marry me, he could have married a lovely model, he had hundreds of models chasing him, but he married funny old me and that’s because it was meant to be.

“All I knew is that I would go anywhere for love.

“I so believe in romance and that wonderful moment where you fall in love and you are just so with your man that you are like under the skin.”

Sarah and Andrew will both be excited to celebrate Princess Beatrice’s wedding with her next year.

Princess Beatrice’s big day is expected to be less lavish than recent royal weddings and will receive no taxpayer funding.

The event will be paid for privately and the Mail on Sunday reported Beatrice will forgo the usual carriage ride and spectacular settings for a special day in her parent’s back garden.

There is even speculation Beatrice could buck the royal wedding trend of having a dress made by a famous fashion house.

Instead, the Princess of York may recruit a lesser-known designer to make her gown.

A palace source told Radar: “At this point, rather embarrassingly, the response has been lukewarm and it looks like she might have to actually pay and design it for herself.”
