Fergie, 61, has had a busy week following the release of new book Her Heart for a Compass. And Richard Eden from the Daily Mail suggests the Duchess of York has been invited to the Queen’s Scottish castle. Balmoral holds particular significance for Fergie – as she holidayed there in 1992 when intimate pictures of her were published in the British press.
According to royal expert Camilla Tominey, the story caused a fracture in her relationship with the Duke of Edinburgh, who died in April aged 99. It also reportedly led to an “excruciating” breakfast with Her Majesty during her stay.
Royal commentators believe Prince Philip never entirely warmed to Fergie, though he did attend weddings of her beloved daughters, Eugenie and Beatrice.
In 2019, reports claimed Fergie left Balmoral early while on a summer holiday due to a sooner-than-expected arrival of Philip. This was considered an indicator of lingering tension.
She has been a regular visitor in recent summers – and, according to Mr Eden’s “man in the kilt” Balmoral source, will join Her Majesty in in 2021.
The source said: “Sarah Ferguson is coming.
“She will be here with Andrew.”
The journey from her home at Windsor’s Royal Lodge to the Scottish castle in Aberdeenshire is 500 miles.
Ms Tominey noted the Queen’s perception of Fergie in a July piece for The Telegraph.
She wrote: “Palace insiders say the 95-year-old monarch has always admired the way the Duchess has not only been ‘such a good mother’ to Beatrice and Eugenie, but also crucially, such a stalwart support of her ‘favourite’ son.
“In June 2019, the Queen even invited her former daughter-in-law to join the family for the penultimate day of Royal Ascot.”
Speaking of Philip after his death, Fergie told Ms Tominey: “The Duke was an extraordinary consort, father and grandfather, and his passing has left a great void in the family.
“He served his nation and the Queen with incredible dedication for almost 70 years.”
