Sarah Ferguson – affectionately known as Fergie – and Prince Andrew married in their spectacular royal wedding in 1986. The Duke and Duchess of York welcomed Princess Beatrice in 1988 and Princess Eugenie in 1990, however they did not lose their reputation for their sense of fun. One particularly boisterous occasion involved Fergie dressing up as a mermaid and squeezing into a giant sardine tin, in front of a star-studded crowd that included Michael Caine and Elton John.

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward, in her 1991 book “Sarah: HRH The Duchess of York”, describes the royal pair’s social life together.

Ms Seward writes: “It is a lively crowd which shares Andrew and Sarah’s love of boisterous good fun.

“At a joint birthday party for Andrew and Australian comedian Barry Humphries (their February birthdays are two days apart), hostess Pamela Stephenson with Sarah and Elton John’s manager John Reid went upstairs and wiggled into tight gold lamé dresses and blonde wigs. 

“Hobbling back downstairs, Michael Caine helped them into a large ‘sardine can’ box which he covered over.

“Then, with Elton John tinkling away on the piano, the Duke of York and Barry Humphries rilled back the lid – and out leapt the three ‘mermaids’ signing Happy Birthday.

“As Reid said to friends: ‘Andrew’s face was a picture’.”

Pamela Stephenson was also the mastermind behind the now-infamous policewomen stunt, where she, Princess Diana, Fergie and Renate Blauel, the then-wife of Elton John, all attempted to crash Prince Andrew’s stag party. 

The comedian was also alongside Elton John at the engagement party thrown by Sarah’s father, Major Ronald Ferguson, that was bluntly snubbed by Princess Michael of Kent. 

The Queen was in attendance at the huge dinner dance, alongside Fergie’s friends and family, and US First Lady Nancy Reagan. 

However, Ms Seward writes: “[One] table was one person short. 

“The missing person was Princess Michael of Kent. 

“When Prince Michael arrived, he was on his own. 

“He had no explanation for his wife’s absence, only an apology.” 

However, this screaming social faux pas was not repeated at Andrew and Fergie’s wedding, which Princess Michael of Kent did show up for. 

In recent months, the Duke adn Duchess of York, who divroced in 1996, have been at the centre of rumours of a rekindled royal romance. 

Earlier this year, ITV News’ Royal Editor Chris Ship claimed the pair were “unofficially back together” after they spent an April weekend in Bahrain side by side. 

However, despite the revelation, the Duchess continues to deny the claims.
