The video, uploaded to Instagram by Anthony Mitson, shows two rats running along a basket of unpackaged croissants in a Sainsbury’s on Essex Road, Islington. Mr Mitson managed to film the rats scurrying around the uncovered basket before disappearing behind the milk fridge.
Since it was posted yesterday, the video has been shared widely online and shoppers are vowing never to buy loose goods again.
One wrote: “Omg I am never getting fresh bakery stuff again.”
Another agreed: “Omg!!! I’m never having unpacked croissants again.”
A third said: “This video is a perfect example of why supermarkets need to stop selling pastry out in the open like this. It’s not just the rats it’s the flies too.”
Sainsbury’s said it took ‘immediate action’ to clean the store on Sunday and called in pest control.
