‘Sad’ Charles raised tender toast to Archie ‘wherever you are’

King Charles raised a glass at Buckingham Palace yesterday to toast his grandson Prince Archie Harrison’s fourth birthday after Prince Harry dashed back to the US to be with his son, it has emerged. King Charles is understood to have paid a touching tribute to his absent grandchildren and “those that weren’t there” and wished his grandson, who stayed in the US, a very happy birthday “wherever he was”. A source told the Mail: “It was apparently a very sweet moment”.

The King made the poignant toast during a private family gathering at the palace following his historic day where he was crowned King alongside his wife, Queen Camilla.

His touching words came after the Duke of Sussex dashed back to California on a British Airways flight within hours of his father’s Coronation to be with wife Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

It is reported Harry had been invited to attend the family lunch, but the duke was keen to get back to his family state side.

A source claimed that while most members of the Firm “breathed a sigh of relief” that Harry declined the invitation, the 74-year-old King was “genuinely quite disappointed that he didn’t stay”.

Harry arrived at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at around 7.30pm local time (3.30am UK) to reunite with his son on his birthday.

His abrupt return to the US meant he did not appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the finale of the day, with the Palace confirming earlier that he had no formal role at the event.

Also absent from the balcony was King Charles’s brother, Prince Andrew.

Prince Archie turned four on Saturday and spent the day with his mother, the Duchess of Sussex, at their US home.
