Ryan Giggs' poem about ex making him 'hard as a totem pole' read out in court
The latest stage in Ryan Giggs’ trial for alleged assault against his ex-girlfriend has seen the pair’s intimate messages read out in court, including raunchy poems.
The former Manchester United star, 48, is accused of headbutting Kate Greville, 38, after ‘completely losing control’ at his home in Worsley, Greater Manchester, in November 2020.
Prosecutors say the incident followed a two-and-a-half-year ‘toxic, damaging’ period in their relationship in which he controlled and coerced her.
Giggs denies the charges, as well as allegations he threatened to headbutt Ms Greville’s sister Emma and claims his head clashed with Kate’s accidentally during a ‘scuffle’.
In August 2017, Ms Greville messaged him: ‘You make my heart flutter because you are a nutter.
‘Every day you do me proud not just because you are well endowed.’
The following day, which is when his coercive behaviour is alleged to have began, he replied: ‘Darling Kate. Unequivocally our love was fate.
‘I fell in love with you at first sight. I remember coz I was as high as a kite.
‘Those beautiful eyes, made me shiver.
‘I’m not gonna lie, I think of you, I dream of you. Can’t help thinking, pulling you was my greatest ever coo [sic].
‘That stomach, those abs, those pictures you sent.
‘So I can keep tabs on you, makes me feel funny down there. Especially when you are there and you look up and stare.
‘I’m beginning to think you are always right. That’s okay it will keep us tight
‘I’m gonna end by saying you are my love, my friend, my soul.
‘And most of all you believe in me. Which makes me feel as hard as a totem pole.’
Giggs’ mother sat in Manchester Crown Court’s public gallery as the messages were read out by his defence team.
A snapshot of their relationship built up as messages starting in October 2013 were read in chronological order until 2018.
Giggs’ messages often heaped praise on his then-lover and promised to ‘pamper’ her for the rest of her life, on one occasion telling her he loved her ‘more than all of his Premier League appearances, which is a lot’.
She often replied in kind, telling him he was her ‘world’ and writing in June 2017: ‘We are going to be that old couple sitting in a restaurant still laughing when we are 60 or 70.’
Occasionally the tone appeared less harmonious, with the footballer texting her during one meeting: ‘Please don’t leave me hanging Kate, I don’t know if we’ve fallen out or not… Love you baby so much xxx…. You look f***ing unbelievably beautiful.’
Giggs previously told the court he ‘didn’t know’ why he wasn’t heard to challenge the report given by Ms Greville’s sister as she spoke to a 999 operator, when he was heard shouting ‘you f***ing caused this’.
The trial continues.
