The comedian and actor is known for his controversial humour, and he expressed his opposition to the monarchy in a provocative way. Brand shared a passage from his book ‘Revolution’ in 2015 in which he mocked the Queen claiming she is German. He said in the passage released in 2015: “We should be calling her Mrs Windsor. “In fact, that’s not even her real name, they changed it in the war to distract us from the inconvenient fact that they were as German as the enemy that teenage boys were being encouraged, conscripted actually, to die fighting.

“Her actual name is Mrs Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

“Mrs Saxe-Coburg-Gotha!! No wonder they f***ing changed it.

“It’s the most German thing I’ve ever heard – she might’ve well as being called ‘Mrs Bratwurst-Kraut-Nazi.'”

He also criticised the idea of a Royal Family, calling the Queen “just a person”.

He ranted: “I mean in England we have a Queen for f***’s sake. A Queen! We have to call her things like ‘Your Majesty’ YOUR MAJESTY!

“Like she’s all majestic, like an eagle or a mountain. She’s just a person. A little old lady in a shiny hat – that we paid for. Or ‘Your Highness!’

“What the f**k is that?! What, she’s high up, above us, at the top of a class pyramid on a shelf of money with her own face on it.”

Brand’s animated comments came after the Sun released images of the Queen doing an apparent Nazi salute as a child.

Buckingham Palace said at the time that “Most people will see these pictures in their proper context and time.

“This is a family playing and momentarily referencing a gesture many would have seen from contemporary news reels. No one at that time had any sense how it would evolve,” the statement added.

It added that Queen Elizabeth II was “six years of age at the time and entirely innocent of attaching any meaning to these gestures.

“The Queen and her family’s dedication to the welfare of this nation during the war, and the 63 years she has spent building relations between nations and peoples speaks for itself.”

Another prominent comedian who has suggested abolishing the monarchy is Steve Coogan.

The comedian made the admission in an interview with BBC Radio 4’s The Day Today show in 2013, saying: “We have some comments we’re going to make tomorrow at the premiere when I am dressed as Alan. He’ll be attacking republicans.

“Now, there’s an example where I really am the opposite of Alan. I’d abolish the Royal Family tomorrow if I had any power.

“But he does sometimes say things that I instinctively think are right.”
