Runway llama causes cause on M55 motorway baffling drivers

Both police and highways officers were called to the area after a llama was spotted on the M55 at junction three near Wesham.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 31. Part of the incident was captured on video by a BBC journalist’s relative.

The llama’s runabout at around 9pm led to queues on the motorway. National Highways said they helped shepherd the animal to safety, but it is not known how the animal ended up taking a wrong turn.

BBC journalist Molly Brewer, who shared the video on Twitter, said: “Parents just sent me this through…they say a llama has been on the loose near the M55 junction three causing tailback traffic.”

It was reported that Sue Brewer, Ms Brewer’s mum, who was a passenger in a car stuck in the queue, captured the llama storming onto the carriageway.

In the footage, the animal can be seen walking past a Highways Police vehicle, before being confronted.

Witnesses can be seen looking on as the animal is gently guided through the stopped traffic.

In a statement, Lancashire Constabulary said they received a call about the llama, but that “it was all dealt with by the time we arrived”.

This isn’t the first time the M55 has been in the news this week, as work continues to modify the motorway.

LancashireLive reported that motorists were warned of overnight closures as National Highways worked to finish a ‘missing’ junction.

The new road will link the M55 to a new junction with Blackpool Road at Lea. The junction is being constructed between Swillbrook and Higher Bartle.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: “When the motorway re-opens on Saturday 3 June, the eastbound carriageway will be restored to normal running arrangements with lane one re-opened and the 70mph speed limit in place.

“The lane one closure and 50mph speed limit along the westbound carriageway will be lifted at the same time as the new junction and new link road, between the M55 and A583 at Lea via Bartle, are opened.

“The date for this will be announced soon, ahead of the opening of the new road.”
