Runaway teen girl shoots herself dead as cop tries to convince her to go home
A teenage girl who ran away from home shot herself dead when a cop tried to convince her to go back home.
The 14-year-old girl was believed to have run away and was attending a party in Aurora, Kansas, according to the Cloud County Sheriff’s Office.
She has been identified as Jaylee Chillson in a GoFundMe page to help her family provide her with ‘a dignified farewell’.
A sheriff’s deputy responded to a party at an outdoor field with high school and college students near 210th and Lark roads.
‘The deputy located the girl, and tried to convince her to return to her family,’ stated the sheriff’s office.
‘He was escorting her to his patrol vehicle, when she pulled out a firearm and shot herself.’
The deputy did not draw his weapon. The deputy and a firefighter applied life-saving measures to Chillson, but she was pronounced dead at the scene just after midnight on September 17.
Several party attendees witnessed the incident and were interviewed.
Chillson’s father, Jeb, shared a picture of his daughter on Facebook and called her death ‘unbearable’.
‘The world lost one of its brightest lights. This girl has the biggest heart of anyone I know and has since she was just a little girl,’ he wrote.
‘There wasn’t a day that went by that she couldn’t make you laugh till you couldn’t breathe. She is amazing. Perfect. Everything you could ever ask for in a daughter.’
Jeb added: ‘I’m angry with those that hurt my baby. I’m furious with those I KNOW hurt her and will talk about her now like they didn’t play a part in crushing her.’
The sheriff’s office requested that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation assist in conducting a probe into Chillson’s death ‘to ensure impartiality since their deputy was present during the shooting’. It is an ongoing investigation.
Chillson’s GoFundMe page states that ‘your contribution, no matter how small, will ease their financial burden and let them focus on healing after this devastating loss’.
‘Please donate today to help this grieving family,’ it states. ‘Your kindness will help them through this heart-wrenching journey and honor Jaylee’s memory.’
The page had received more than $4,400 in donations as of Friday evening.
