This is the scene in one north county Dublin housing estate, with rubbish piling up since before Christmas.

Mounds of rubbish have accumulated along pavements and car parking areas close to several apartment blocks in Applewood in Swords.

Residents say rubbish from sheds in the common areas – where apartment inhabitants are asked to leave their refuse – have not been collected since before Christmas and are now attracting rats.

The waste company that is contracted to collect the rubbish, and the management company for the apartments affected, would not comment on the issue, although it is understood some moves are being made to resolve the problem.

One resident claimed it was being made worse by local residents from nearby houses, who dump their rubbish in the Applewood shed rather than pay for their own wheelie-bin service.

“The smell is getting worse, and I have seen rats here too running from the shed,” resident Joanna Mulewska explained.

“I have a young child and I am worried about the health issues. This has to stop.

“When I ring the management company I get no answer,” she added.
