Royals want York family to ‘stay under the radar’ after Andrew embarassment

Coronation: Prince Harry, Andrew, and York Princesses arrive

It is hoped that the York family “will stay under the radar”, a royal expert has claimed.

Royal biographer Andrew Lownie said that Prince Andrew is viewed by the rest of the Royal Family as an “embarrassment” and Sarah Ferguson “continues to generate unfortunate headlines”.

Just this week, sources told Express.co.uk that Andrew was prevented from appearing at this year’s Order of the Garter Day as the Palace appears to have doubled down on limiting the disgraced Duke’s public appearances.

Nevertheless, the author of the 2021 work Traitor King said the Firm — which lost both Andrew and the Sussexes in quick succession — “needs” more working royals.

Due to the demand of their young families — Princess Eugenie gave birth to her second son at the end of May — and careers, it seems unfeasible that Andrew’s two daughters could take on prominent roles. However, Mr Lownie suggested to Express.co.uk that it is hoped that the York clan will stay out of the spotlight entirely.

Mr Lownie said: “The Firm need more working royals but the daughters are young mothers and have careers. Eugenie spends much time in Portugal so not ideal.”

Last month, in a similar vein to Mr Lownie, Princess Anne voiced her concerns about a slimmed-down Royal Family.

In an interview with the Canadian broadcaster CBC News, Princess Royal — who frequently tops the list for the royal who has carried out the highest number of royal engagements in a year — said she did not think it was a “good idea” anymore as it was originally thought up when there were more people around.

But both the York Princesses have their hands full. While Eugenie is the associate director of the London art gallery Hauser & Wirth, Princess Beatrice is Vice President of Partnerships and Strategy at the tech company Afiniti.

Both the York Princess have young children and Andrew’s second daughter Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank split their time between the UK and Portugal.

Last year, Jack landed a job with property tycoon Mike Meldman and his Discovery Land Company, one of actor George Clooney’s business partners.

The Telegraph reported that they now live half of the year on the CostaTerra Gold and Ocean Club south of Lisbon.

But regardless of what may be keeping them busy, Mr Lownie believes it is preferred that the York family stay out of the spotlight.

He continued: “There’s a hope the York family, in general, will stay under the radar… Their mother [Sarah Ferguson] continues to generate unfortunate headlines.”

Fergie recently started a podcast, Tea Talks, with her friend, entrepreneur Sarah Thomson, where she promises that no topic is off-limits.

The disgraced Prince, who stepped back from royal duties following his car crash Newsnight interview in 2019, has been making headlines of late as he is reportedly refusing to move out of the 30-room Royal Lodge he shares with his ex-wife.

Mr Lownie added: “The family see him as an embarrassment but he has never been one to be pushed around. Self-awareness is not one of his qualities.”
