Royals kept Prince Harry ‘out of loop’ on phone hacking fears

Prince Harry was “kept out of the loop” on phone hacking fears, the High Court was told. The Duke of Sussex understands that the Royal Family used his time in Afghanistan to deal with the concerns surrounding phone hacking. He claimed that the Royal Family failed to let him know of any updates along the way.

Harry’s lawyer said he was only aware of one claim before 2012 – despite being “at the epicentre” of hacking claims as early as 2006.

David Sherborne, who is representing Prince Harry, has told the court that, up until 2012, the 38-year-old believed there was only one voicemail that had been intercepted. This was one left for him by his elder brother, Prince William.

Sherborne stated that Harry thought the tabloid press “wouldn’t have been stupid enough” to invade the messages, particularly after the security services’ “involvement”.

As far as claiming he was “kept out of the loop”, Harry was reportedly aware that there were royal staff members who believed their phones had been hacked.

After being kept in the dark, Harry was reportedly “told more” in 2012.

It was added that there was “no criticism” of the late Queen or the Royal Family, as this is “how it was done” and that he “accepted” it.

The publisher’s lawyers dispute the allegations and claim there is no hard evidence against the paper.

They state that there are only “general pleas” of voicemail interception and phone tapping by The Sun journalists.

Last month, Harry attended a court hearing at London’s High Court. The visit was Harry’s first time in the UK since last September.

Harry wasn’t the only high-profile person attending the hearing – Sir Elton John and Sadie Frost were also present – who are part of the same joint claim.

Seven high-profile people in total gave brought the lawsuit against Associated Newspapers.

Prince Harry is set to be reunited with the Royal Family on May 6 – for the King’s Coronation.

Harry is flying over to the UK to support his father, while Meghan remains in the US with the couple’s two children.

It remains unclear how long the Duke will be over in the UK for, although it is expected to be a short trip as his son Archie’s birthday falls on the same day as the Coronation.
