King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgian Royal Family have cancelled their forthcoming engagements as they are in self-isolation. An undeclared family member, speculated to be one of their youngest children, has tested positive for the virus resulting in the royal couple limiting their social contact.
The cancellation of their appearances is a precautionary measure after a member of the family has been diagnosed with coronavirus.
Both Philippe and Mathilde have taken PCR tests which gave negative results, but the royals will remain in isolation as a precaution.
The couple have four children together, Princess Elisabeth, 19, Prince Gabriel, 18, Prince Emmanuel, 15, and Princess Eléonore, 13.
While no confirmation has been given as to which family member has contracted Covid, Belga, a popular Belgian news agency, has speculated that it is likely to be one of the youngest of the couple’s four children.
At present no update has been made with regards to who has tested positive for the virus.
A statement issued by the Royal Family simply read: “Following a confirmed Covid-19 case within the Royal Family, their Majesties the King and Queen have decided to limit their contacts in the coming days as a precaution, in accordance with health regulations.”
All engagements scheduled for King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, up to and including Monday, September 6, have been cancelled.
Due to the couple’s isolation, Queen Mathilde is unlikely to attend the funeral of her uncle, Count Henri d’Udekem which will take place tomorrow, Friday, September 3.
