Royal wedding: Will royals pay for Beatrice wedding after petition against Eugenie’s?
As Princess Beatrice, 31, and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, 36, prepare to tie the knot, royalists are excited for another royal wedding. Republicans, on the other hand, will be less enthused as British taxpayers usually foot some of the bill for these events. A petition to make the Royal Family pay for the whole of Princess Eugenie’s wedding to Jack Brooksbank last autumn gained thousands of signatures – could this mean the Royal Family will pay for all of Princess Beatrice’s wedding?
Royal weddings are lavish occasions with few expenses spared.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s big day in May 2018 is reported to have cost more than £35million.
While the Royal Family paid for most of this, the British Government contributed towards the security bill.
When Princess Beatrice’s little sister Princess Eugenie tied the knot with Jack Brooksbank on October 12, 2018 her big day was estimated to have cost the British Public around £2million.
In the lead-up to Eugenie’s wedding anti-royals campaign group Republic launched a petition against the wedding that was signed by 14,000 outraged taxpayers.
The petition called for the “House of Commons to urge the Government to commit no public money to the wedding”.
Republic also urged the Government to “publish a report of all costs to taxpayers”.
The cost of royal weddings to the public allegedly covers officers’ overtime pay, holiday cancellations, and requests for extra patrols.
Princess Beatrice is ninth in line to the British throne and while she is Queen Elizabeth II’s granddaughter, she cannot be considered a senior royal.
The groom, Edoardo, is a multimillionaire having amassed a fortune through his real estate business.
While it is not yet clear who will pay for Princess Beatrice’s wedding, if she follows in her sister’s footsteps then the bulk of the costs will be covered by the family themselves with some state contributions being made too.
The venue and precise date of Bea’s big day are yet to be announced but many believe a spring wedding is most likely.
The latest three royal weddings have all taken place at St George’s Chapel Windsor but there’s a chance Edo and Bea could choose to buck the trend.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank and Lady Gabriella Windsor and Tom Kingston were all married at the Windsor chapel.
Following last week’s engagement announcement, The Duke and Duchess of York expressed their excitement at their daughter’s big news.
An official statement from Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson read: “We are thrilled that Beatrice and Edoardo have got engaged, having watched their relationship develop with pride.
“We are the lucky parents of a wonderful daughter who has found her love and companion in a completely devoted friend and loyal young man.
“We send them every good wish for a wonderful family future.”
