Princess Diana was a vision in white on her wedding day in 1981. But it has been revealed 20-year-old Diana decided to make a subtle tribute to Prince Charles, and she had some very specific concerns about some of the logistics of the big day. Read on to find out the heartfelt steps (quite literally) that Diana took to show her affection for Prince Charles.

When the soon-to-be Diana, Princess of Wales, glided up the stairs to St Paul’s Cathedral, all eyes were on her spectacular dress.

The gown was designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel, who at the time were relatively new to the world of fashion.

Elizabeth called a celebrity designer, Clive Shilton, to design the shoes Princess Diana would wear for her wedding day.

And while many brides may fret over every detail of their wedding outfit, Diana had many reasons to get the shoes just right for her big day.

Mr Shilton told the Daily Mail: “She was a very shy, sweet, smiley-eyed young girl.

“Her main concern was that she wouldn’t appear taller than Prince Charles, and because she was very tall — 5ft 10in — the shoes would have to have a low heel.”

As a result, the shoe designer took great care to design a pair of shoes with a very small heel.

And, in a tribute to her fiance, Diana also made a special request for the soles of her shoes.

The arches of her shoes were adorned with the letters ‘C’ and ‘D’, with a love heart nestled between them.

Mr Shilton added: “No one even saw the bottom of the shoes, but it was important to us that they looked fantastic.

“You would have seen much more of them if she’d tripped!”

The publication reported that the shoes took six months to make.

A spare pair of shoes Mr Shilton made for the Diana’s wedding day sold at auction for £36,000 in 2011.
