Royal wedding 2020: The most important royal engagement of the past 10 years REVEALED

The Royal Family will welcome their fourth wedding in two years in 2020, as Princess Beatrice ties the knot with Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. While theirs is the fourth most recent wedding, it is the sixth of the last decade, and one royal expert has revealed which is the most important.

Which is the most important royal wedding of the last 10 years?

Over the past decade, six senior royals have tied the knot.

The first to do so in the latest decade was Prince William, who married Kate Middleton in 2011.

Their wedding paved the way for the future of the monarchy, as they have since welcomed three children who could one day take the British throne, reshaping the structure of the monarchy.

The next wedding was Prince Harry’s to Meghan Markle in 2018, which has since produced changes to the Royal Family’s inner-workings.

Harry and William’s royal foundation split into two separate entities, as Duke and Duchess of Sussex formed the Sussex Foundation.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have also stepped back from the public eye, and are currently on a sabbatical until 2020.

Express.co.uk asked Academic Librarian and royal expert Marlene Koenig which of the Royal Family’s most recent weddings was the most important.

She said: “In terms of the dynasty, the Duke of Cambridge’s wedding is certainly more ‘important’ because of his position as the elder son of the heir to the throne, a future king.

“Harry’s wedding was also important but not on the same level.

“It was very much a public event, a marriage between the younger son of the Prince of Wales and a former American actress.

“Neither King George V nor King George VI lived long enough to see grandchildren marry and have families, so difficult to put a comparison to the weddings of King George V’s younger children and that of Prince Harry.”

“All three of George V’s younger surviving sons (Duke of York, Duke of Gloucester and Duke of Kent) all married at Westminster Abbey with grand weddings.

“Harry could have had that as well – but he and Meghan chose St George’s Chapel as their venue.

“I think the word ‘Important’ could be used for both princes’ weddings.

“For William, the importance is the future of the dynasty, while Harry’s marriage was important for breaking barriers: marrying a lovely bi-racial divorced American woman.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are due to return to work in 2020 after six weeks off.

According to a royal insider, the Duchess of Sussex has been working behind the scenes, however.

The Daily Telegraph revealed earlier this month the Duchess met with her former publicist, Keleigh Thomas Morgan, while she was visiting the US with Prince Harry and their son, Archie Mountbatten Windsor, earlier this year.

A source told the publication Meghan was hoping to make the newly established Sussex Foundation an “international charity” in the new year.
