Royal wedding 2019: The touching reason the ceremony will be held at this venue

Monaco will celebrate its second royal wedding in a matter of months when Prince Albert II’s nephew Louis Ducruet marries his college sweetheart tomorrow. The 26-year-old AS Monaco football scout is 15th in line to the throne and will marry Marie Chevallier  tomorrow. In an interview ahead of the wedding Louis revealed the moving reason he wanted the wedding at Saint Nicolas Cathedral.

Saint Nicholas Cathedral is 116 years old and is the spiritual home of Monaco’s royal family.

The stunning Roman-Byzantine style building includes a chapel at dates back to the 13th century.

The sacred structure is where Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III got married for decades and is also home to the Grimaldi family’s crypt.

Grace Kelly was laid to rest there after she died following a tragic car accident in 1982 and her husband Prince Rainier III was buried in the same tomb in April 2005.

While Louis never met his grandmother, Princess Grace, he was very close to his grandfather.

The soon-to-be groom has revealed why he and Marie chose to have the wedding at Saint Nicholas.

In an interview with local publication Hello Monaco ahead of the ceremony, Louis said: “Since I was born I have a particular admiration for my grandfather.

“I didn’t manage to meet my grandmother, but I was really attached to my grandfather. And I wanted him to be here with me.

“At some point, he will be with me during the wedding ceremony at the cathedral.”

He continued: “That’s why we chose it, and Marie supported me in this decision, even though the place is big and there’s a protocol, but that’s the only way for my grandfather to be with us.”

“I admired just seeing him talking to people, being very natural and sensitive to every employee of the Palace.

“He was attentive to everybody and always had a little joke to tell.

“In some way, he built my personality as I used to look up to him.

“He was a really good role model for me. I was very lucky with both grandfathers.

“I have a lot of admiration for both of them; one was a prince and the other, Henry Ducruet, built himself and succeeded from nothing.

“I think it is important to tell the world that I had two great role models in my grandfathers,” he added.

Louis and Marie had been together for six years when Louis popped the question last February.

Asked if he wasn’t too young to get married, the royal replied: “You don’t choose your soulmate. I met Marie at university, and ever since we have been together.

“We went to the same university in the USA when Marie studied her major and graduated together.

“Then we decided to stay in Monaco. It was the best solution for both of us. And here we are.”
