Royal U-turn: How Meghan and Harry are still hard at work despite six-week break pledge
Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry are currently in Canada, where they spent Christmas with baby Archie. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been away from the UK since November, and have taken a break from their official royal duties while visiting Canada and the US where they spent Thanksgiving with the Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland. The Duke and Duchess are expected to return to royal life in the New Year, although nothing has yet been officially confirmed by the Palace.
However, while the six-week break was reported to be “family time” for the Sussexes, the Duke and Duchess have actually been hard at work on their charity foundation Sussex Royal in the US, according to royal correspondent Victoria Ward.
Ms Ward, writing in The Telegraph earlier this month, said: “Sources confirmed that she had met with Keleigh Thomas Morgan, her former publicist and a partner at celebrity PR firm Sunshine Sachs, in recent weeks whilst in the US with Prince Harry, their son Archie and her mother, Doria Ragland.
“She is said to be ‘taking the reins’ on the forthcoming foundation launch and insisting on maintaining complete creative control.”
A source told Ms Ward: “This is a mission that Meghan has been on for a long time.
“Even in her younger years in Hollywood, she wanted to work towards creating an international charity changing lives.
“Now that she has the platform and profile of being a British royal she can truly build this plan.
“She sees this foundation as one of the key factors in creating a legacy as a new royal and Harry is right behind her.
“While Harry and Meghan are technically on rest, she is not the type of woman who likes doing nothing; so this break actually could be seen by some as very fortuitous.”
The source added: “What is most interesting is that Meghan feels that while the charity will be a worldwide venture, she sees Hollywood and American business circles as key to fundraising.
“Meghan feels that focusing on fundraising stateside will bring in tens of millions of dollars quickly.”
Buckingham Palace confirmed earlier this year that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are working with celebrity PR firm Sunshine Sachs, where Meghan’s former Hollywood publicist Keleigh Thomas Morgan is a director.
The firm’s retainer, thought to be in the region of £20,000 per month, is paid for privately according to The Telegraph.
The decision to hire Sunshine Sachs in September this year caused a stir, as the firm was previously known for “crisis-management” of celebrity PR scandals.

Added to this, the decision was reportedly made without the support of Buckingham Palace’s own PR teams.
Vanity Fair called the Duchess’ six-week family leave time a “working vacation”.
Reporter Erin Vanderhoof wrote: “After Archie was born in early May, Meghan had planned on taking maternity leave for a few months.
“Soon, she did make an appearance on the royal balcony for Trooping the Colour in June, and was spotted at various events for the rest of the summer, looking relaxed and carefree.
“Then she debuted a slate of projects at the end of July, making it clear that ‘leave’ meant something different for Meghan than it does for the rest of us.”
Harry and Meghan have also filed to trademark their brand name Sussex Royal, it emerged this month.
In documents published on December 20 by the Intellectual Property Office, the trademark covers a range of “goods and services”, including items such as magazines, calendars, posters, greeting cards and clothing.
Following Harry and Meghan’s split from the Royal Foundation, which they jointly worked on with William and Kate, it was renamed the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also filed to trademark the Royal Foundation shortly after the Sussexes application in June.
