Royal tradition: The rare royal habit passed on from Kate to Princess Charlotte

Kate has been often praised for being thrifty despite having an almost endless choice when it comes to clothing, designers and styles. She has been seen wearing and recycling her outfits more than once – a rare trait for a Royal Family member to have.

And, as their children grow up, the Duchess of Cambridge appears to be passing on to them the value of thriftiness and how important it is to limit waste.

Recently, Kate was spotted at a Sainsbury’s branch in King’s Lynn, near the Cambridges’ home in Norfolk, with her three “very well behaved” children.

And it was her thriftiness to attract the attention of one of the other customers.

One royal fan spotted Princess Charlotte wearing the same little green coat she donned on her first Christmas Day walkabout last December.

Royal fan Kate Carter told Hello! magazine: “I noticed Charlotte first as she had the beautiful green jacket on that she wore at Christmas.

“Then I saw Kate, who had Louis in her arms and I thought ‘Am I the only one seeing this?’ I couldn’t believe it was happening.”

Describing the surreal scene, Ms Carter continued: “Kate was with the children, and she looked lovely.

“She is absolutely beautiful, and the children were beautiful.

“They were so well behaved.”

Little Charlotte, who will turn five in May, appeared to be interested in the clothing department, the royal fan continued.

She said: “She was just having a little bit of a walk around.

“They were looking at the clothes when I saw them.

“Charlotte was looking at the dresses, she was dead cute.”

Kate carried out her latest official engagement with Prince William on March 9, when she attended the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey alongside other senior members of the Royal Family.

On that occasion, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a scarlet 1940s custom made Catherine Walker coat dress – the same she wore also on Christmas Day in 2018.

Kate, who with Prince William has signalled her intention to bring up her royal children as normally as possible, has been spotted at a Sainsbury’s branch more than once.

Ahead of last year’s Halloween, the Duchess of Cambridge was seen in the company of Prince George and Princess Charlotte as they were browsing Halloween costumes.

Mum-of-four Kathy Whittaker recalled the experience, saying: “Another shopper said that Kate was in the shop near the clothing and pointed where she was to me.

“I just couldn’t believe it.

“She was with Charlotte and George looking at Halloween outfits but her bodyguard was kind of watching people with phones and telling them no pictures.

“I managed to get the photo as she was at the self service check out.

“I didn’t see what she actually bought. The lady that told me she was there had children with her and she said Kate was asking her children what they were going to be for Halloween.

“I think she bought some Halloween bits for her kids but I don’t know what.”
