Royal snub: Princess Anne’s swipe at younger royal generation – ‘they don’t understand’
The daughter of the Queen, 69, revealed that she is a “fuddy-duddy” when it comes to philanthropy traditions, while the next generations of royals including Meghan and Harry appear to be taking a different approach. Although Anne did not name any of The Firm in particular, Meghan and Harry stepped down as senior royals this year to launch a new organisation in Los Angeles.
Anne also spoke about how she had spent 10 years working with Save The Children charity before she undertook any public debates on behalf of the organisation.
She told Vanity Fair: “I don’t think this younger generation probably understands what I was doing in the past and it’s often true, isn’t it?”
“You don’t necessarily look at the previous generation and say, ‘Oh, you did that?’ Or, ‘You went there?’ she added.
“Nowadays, they’re much more looking for, ‘Oh let’s do it a new way.’
‘And I’m already at the stage, ‘Please do not reinvent that particular wheel.
“We’ve been there, done that. Some of these things don’t work. You may need to go back to basics.”
This year the Princess Royal has attended 500 separate royal engagements, and as she approaches her 70th birthday in August shows little sign of slowing down.
She referred to the work ethic of her parents the Queen, 93, and the Duke of Edinburgh, 98 who continue to still maintain busy schedules.
The Queen who will turn 94 in self-isolation next week, carried out nearly 300 official duties last year- but shows no sign of slowing down soon.
“I don’t think retirement is quite the same [for me],” she said.
“Most people would say we’re very lucky not to be in that situation because you wouldn’t want to just stop.]

“It is, to a large extent, the choice of the organisations you’re involved with and whether they feel you’re still relevant.
“But I think both my father and my mother have, quite rightly, made decisions about, you know, “I can’t spend enough time doing this and we need to find somebody else to do it” because it makes sense.
“I have to admit they continued being there for a lot longer than I had in mind, but we’ll see.”
Anne’s children spend most of their time away from the royal spotlight, although her son Peter Phillips recently hit the headlines with the news he had separated from his wife Autumn.
The pair released a statement at the time to say they were both “naturally sad” about the split but were now going to be focusing on co-parenting their daughters.
However Autumn will not be moving back to her native Canada anytime soon as she continues to live in Gloucestershire to help bring up her children.
It was reported that the couple had spoken with the Queen last Autumn about a potential split, as they had spent months mulling the decision over.
A source revealed, “Whilst sad at the decision, both families are hugely supportive of them both and the girls.”
The split was confirmed on the same day that Anne spoke with Vanity Fair.
The princess also spoke about her joy at being a grandmother with the magazine.
