After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, an Estonian political party called the Independent Royalist Party of Estonia sent a letter to the Palace that stated Prince Edward was a “perfect” fit to be king of Estonia. The letter added that the party admired him “enormously”. However, Buckingham Palace turned down the request and said that it was “a charming idea but a rather unlikely one”.

The Independent Royalist Party party wanted Estonia to be established as a monarchy.

Estonia is now a unitary parliamentary republic with a prime minister, called Kaja Kallas, and a president called Alar Karis.

The Earl of Wessex is the Queen’s youngest child and is married to Sophie, Countess of Wessex.

The pair have two children, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

Lady Louise and James are said to be very close to their grandmother the Queen.

Prince Edward is now 14th in line to the British throne so the chances of him becoming monarch are extremely slim.

The Earl of Wessex was recently seen with his mother the Queen at the start of the Queen’s Baton Relay for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Prince Edward is vice patron of the Commonwealth Games Federation.

A royal documentary from 1999 stated that Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward experienced “emotional turmoil” in the Royal Family.

According to royal commentator Sandra Boler, this is because they witnessed all its “disadvantages”.

Ms Boler spoke to the 1999 documentary, ‘Prince Edward & Sophie Rhys-Jones: The True Story’, which was filmed before the couple got married.

She said: “They’ve spent several years after all under the same roof.

“They have experience of the strains and the enormous emotional turmoil of the Royal Family at a hideous time in the last 10 years for them.

“They’ve seen the damage.

“They’ve watched the hurt.

“They’ve seen the sort of disadvantages of being royal.

“I think that both of them have found something in each other, at least I hope they have, that will sustain them as a couple in the future.”
