Royal snub: How Princess Eugenie told friend to ‘shut up’ after royal title row

Princess Eugenie is a favourite among the public with her down to earth approach. As the daughter of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, the Queen’s son, she was styled with the title ‘Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie of York’ when she was born.

But the 29-year-old, who married long-term boyfriend Jack Brooksbank last year, has revealed she doesn’t care much for the title.

Eugenie revealed she does not like to flaunt her royal status, and dislikes being referred to as Princess.

In an interview with journalist Georgie Greig in 2008 she said: “I don’t like talking about it much and find it annoying when people say things like, ‘Oh, you’re the Princess.

“One of my best friends jokingly says, ‘Hi, Princess,’ and I say, ‘Shut up.’

“It is one of the things that bugs me most in the world.”

Alongside her sister Princess Beatrice, they are the only of the Queen’s granddaughter style with the Princess title.

The title is not compulsory for Eugenie and was a decision made by her parents Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.

A Letters Patent issued by King George V in 1917 states the sovereign’s grandchildren can have Prince or Princess royal titles.

Beatrice and Eugenie both qualify because they’re granddaughters of Queen Elizabeth II.

But not all of the Queen’s grandchildren have royal titles.

Eugenie’s cousins, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, who are the children of Princess Anne, don’t have titles.

The Queen offered to give Anne’s children the honour, but it was declined.

Princess Eugenie has also previously said she tries to live a normal life despite being the granddaughter of perhaps the most famous human in the world.

In an interview with Vogue ahead of her wedding to Jack Brooksbank last year she told about her and sister Beatrice’s everyday life.

She said: “We want to show people who we are as working, young, royal women, but also not to be afraid of putting ourselves out there.

“Nowadays, it’s so easy to recoil when you see a perfect image on Instagram – but it’s important that it’s real. We’re real.

“We’ve had some serious grounding from our parents. They’ve had their fair share of terrible media interest and it makes us stronger.

Eugenie added: ”We believe very strongly in who we are, and the support system of our friends and our family is pretty incredible.”
