Royal SNUB: How Meghan Markle turned down honour with nod to old profession

The Oscars were attended by Hollywood royalty on Sunday night, but could actual royalty have made an appearance? According to reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were asked to perform an incredibly significant function on the night.

According to HELLO! the Duke and Duchess were asked to present the prestigious Best Picture award at the 92nd Academy Awards.

However the Sussexes reportedly turned the honour down, with a source telling the publication: “They were honoured by the request, but declined the invitation.”

Prior to her marriage Meghan had a very successful career as an actress, most notably playing the role of Rachel Zane in legal drama Suits.

The actress could have been right at home at the event, surrounded by her fellow actors and actresses.

But the move could also have been seen as marking Meghan’s return to acting, which has not been confirmed as a possibility since the couple decided to “step back” from senior royal life.

The Duchess will however be extending her voice talents to a Disney initiative soon.

Meghan has reportedly signed a deal with the company, on the condition a donation will be made to anti-poaching charity Elephants Without Borders.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced last month they will no longer be completing royal engagements on behalf of the Crown.

The pair will be dividing their time between North America and the UK.

The Sussexes announced they were seeking “financial independence”, but it is not yet known if the Duchess will return to her showbiz career in the future.

Since the couple revealed their bombshell decision, reports suggest the couple have already attended their first official engagement since quitting senior royal life.

The Sun reported Harry and Meghan attended an investment summit hosted by JP Morgan in Miami, Florida.

It has not been confirmed how much the couple were paid for the engagement, but experts believe the fee could have ranged highly in the six-figure mark.

Under the terms of their departure, Meghan and Harry will no longer receive public funding from the Sovereign Grant.

However the couple have pledged to continue “to lead a life of service.”

In a speech during a dinner for his charity Sentebale, Harry said: “What I want to make clear is we’re not walking away, and we certainly aren’t walking away from you.

“Our hope was to continue serving the Queen, the commonwealth, and my military associations, but without public funding. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible.

“I’ve accepted this, knowing that it doesn’t change who I am or how committed I am.

“But I hope that helps you understand what it had to come to, that I would step my family back from all I have ever known, to take a step forward into what I hope can be a more peaceful life.

“I was born into this life, and it is a great honour to serve my country and the queen.”
