Royal snub: Elton John’s ‘surprising reaction’ to Queen’s request for dance exposed
Elton John had a well known friendship with Princess Diana and became one of her closest confidants in the years after her separation from Prince Charles. After her death, he dedicated his hit song ‘Candle in the Wind’ to her and sang it at her funeral to commemorate her passing. However, she was not the only royal he got along with.
Speaking on The Graham Norton Show back in 2013, Elton revealed the beginning of his ongoing friendship with the Royal Family – starting with the Queen.
He was playing for Prince Andrew’s 21st birthday party at Windsor Castle back in 1981, when he was asked by Lady Diana Spencer – who would go on to become Princess Diana – to dance.
He and Ray Cooper were expected to provide the entertainment for the birthday celebrations for Andrew’s landmark birthday, but they had a chance to relax and socialise afterwards.
Sir Elton told Graham Norton that he and Diana did a “faux Charleston” before they went to dinner – and it was not long before he was asked to go to the disco with Princess Anne too.
He accepted, but told the talk show that it was “the quietest disco you’ve ever heard”.
According to the singer’s 2019 autobiography, ‘Me’, this was “because the Queen was there”.
He explained: “No one wanted to cause any offence to the royal sensibilities, the disco was turned down about as low as you could get without switching it off altogether.”
Sir Elton and Anne danced together to Elvis Presley’s ‘Hound Dog’ – although Sir Elton later said he was just “awkwardly shuffling from foot to foot” so he did not drown out the music.
Then, when talking on Mr Norton’s talk show, he said: “The Queen came in and asked, ‘can we join you?’
“And I said ‘no f**k off’, right.”
The audience laughed at the singer’s sarcasm, before he continued to describe how he and the Queen danced in Windsor Castle together.
Sir Elton explained: “And then they segued into rock around the clock by Bill Haley and I thought this is ridiculous!”
He went on to do a small impersonation of the Queen dancing with her handbag, before describing it as “one of the most surreal moments of my life”.

The singer also explained in his memoir how fond he is of the Royal Family.
He said: “I always found them incredibly charming and funny people.
“I know the Queen’s public image isn’t exactly one of wild frivolity, but I think that’s more to do with the nature of the job.”
Sir Elton’s close relationship with the Royal Family has continued over the years, particularly with Diana’s son Prince Harry.
The singer took some flack for Harry and his wife Meghan Markle when they were heavily criticised for using private jets last summer.
Writing in an Instagram post, he said: “David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safe and tranquility of our home.
“To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight.”
The couple was accused of hypocrisy after they had campaigned in favour of protecting the environment just before they were found to have used four jets in 11 days.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have since moved to Canada as they attempt to pursue a life away from the royal frontline.
