Royal shock: The brutal question Diana asked the Queen that made the Princess look ‘mad’
It is well documented that Diana’s relationship with the Royal Family was strained. And one encounter during a Christmas lunch at Sandringham left the relations in an even worse state. Writing in his book ‘Diana: Her True Story’, author Andrew Morton claimed that Diana had raised the question as to whether the Royal Family would be relevant in a federal Europe.
Mr Morton wrote: “The Queen, Prince Charles and the rest of the royal family looked at her as if she were mad and continued with their debate on who shot the last pheasant of the day, a discussion which occupied the rest of the evening.
“As a friend says: ‘She finds the monarchy claustrophobic and completely outdated with no relevance to today’s life and problems.
“She feels that it is a crumbling institution and believes that the family won’t know what has hit them in a few years’ time unless it changes too’.”
Diana separated from Prince Charles in 1996 following 15 years of marriage.
During her time as a member of the Royal Family, Diana became one of the most recognisable and popular faces in the world.
On the specific day Diana separated from Charles, one royal expert has spoken of the touching question Diana uttered to Charles.
Writing in her book, ‘The Queen and Di: The Untold Story’, Ingrid Seward spoke of the moment the pair met for the first time following their separation.
The two met in Kensington Palace in the first-floor drawing room Diana called the salon of her apartment.
Walking into the room, Diana allegedly asked Charles, “Why did this have to happen?”.
Also writing in the same book, Ms Seward revealed the strain of public life on the royal.
Princess Diana died in 1997.
Prince Charles remarried Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, years later.
