Royal shock: Meghan Markle’s tip on how to ‘break the family traditions’

The Duchess of Sussex is to spend her first Christmas as a parent with her husband Prince Harry, son Archie Harrison and mother Doria Ragland. But before joining the Royal Family, Meghan had shared tips on how to spend the festive period in style – or away from the family.

In a resurfaced article Meghan wrote for Grazia magazine in 2015, the now-Duchess of Sussex spoke about the possibility of having a friends’ buffet instead of a Christmas lunch with relatives.

She wrote: “Holidays with your friends allows you to break the family traditions and avoid Aunt Julie’s fruit cake!

“Have each of your friends bring a dish or cook together in the kitchen.

“If you do not have a proper set-up, use your dining room table or kitchen counter as a buffet.”

Meghan, who at the time was also writing on her lifestyle blog The Tig, also shared other tips focused on how to decorate the house or the table ahead of Christmas lunch.

In one of her tips shared with Grazia, Meghan explained how to “fake fancy”.

She said: “Purchase silver serving trays, platters, nut bowls from flea markets or Etsy to add formality to hors d’ouevres passing.”

In another tip, Meghan explained how to “repurpose bar essentials for the tabletop”.

She wrote: “Use mint julep cups or Moscow mule mugs as low vases instead of drinking mugs.

“Fill with savory herbs or all white florals.”

Meghan is on a six-week break from royal duties with Prince Harry and Archie, which will last until after Christmas, as confirmed in November by a spokesperson for the Sussexes.

In their statement, the spokesperson added Meghan and Harry won’t be at Sandringham to celebrate Christmas with the Queen and other senior royals.

They said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward to extended family time towards the end of this month.

“Having spent the last two Christmases at Sandringham, [the couple] will spend the holiday this year, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria.

“This decision is in line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, and has the support of Her Majesty The Queen.”

Further details regarding the whereabouts of the Sussexes won’t be shared by the palace to protect Meghan, Harry and Archie’s security and privacy.

However, one royal expert have claimed the family is in the US, fuelling speculation Meghan will spend Christmas in LA, where she was born and brought up.

A guest of the OnHeir podcast by Omid Scobie, royal producer at ITV News Lizzie Robinson, claimed Meghan, Harry and Archie are not in the UK, adding details to the brief statement released by a spokesperson for the Sussexes in November.

Ms Robinson said: “We know they’re away, they’re not even in the country.”

Mr Scobie added: “It’s a long-time trip that they’re on, I think we are really going to see them away until Christmas as far as I’m aware, which is good for them.”

Ms Robinson added the family “probably” welcomed “being away, and back home for Meghan, in the US”.
