Royal shock: How Meghan must become more ‘comfortable’ following ‘bizarre’ party rules

One of the rules the Duchess must abide by is never revealing to fellow guests why she is leaving the table. A Daily Star article claimed members of the Royal Family must never ‘announce their intentions’ when they leave the table. It added: “When it comes to dinner parties, table etiquette is important and the Duchess of Sussex must think twice about what she says.”

Should Meghan or any other royal need to depart the gathering, they need to say “excuse me” before leaving.

If a royal does leave in the middle of a meal, they are expected to cross their knife and fork to symbolise they’re not finished eating.

This is to allow staff to know if the plate is not ready to be cleared.

The news outlet went on to say: “If they’ve licked their plate clean before nipping to the loo, they must put their cutlery at an angle, with the handles at the bottom right of the plate.”

While Meghan is expected to follow these rules since marrying Prince Harry in 2018, she has been known to break royal protocol on several occasions.

During her pregnancy with Archie, Meghan decided against delivering at the famed Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in London in favour of a private delivery.

She also attended a baby shower for her in the US which is unusual for a British royal.

An insider told Us magazine in July how Meghan is determined to live by her own rules.

The source said: “This is her life but her mentality is like, ‘Well, if this is what it’s going to be like, I’m going to do what I want to do. I won’t play by these rules.’

“Meghan is figuring out what she can do in terms of being active and more comfortable with her role.“

Former Suits star Meghan was at home in Hollywood but the American was clearly self-conscious of slipping up when she first met Prince Harry’s grandmother the Queen.

The Duchess of Sussex-to-be went to special lengths to ensure the encounter was a success.

In order to make a good impression on her future grandmother-in-law, Meghan is reported to have taken an etiquette class.

The two-hour lesson was taught by etiquette expert Edmund Fry who instructed the American on how to hold a cup and saucer and use a knife and fork.

Mr Fry lumped praise on Meghan describing her as an “amazing young lady.”

He said: She is an amazing young lady, so very in control herself and very nice with people. She was very nice, not loud, very gentle, beautiful to look at, beautifully dressed, really well put out.

“I wouldn’t say ostentatiously expensive – not like ‘I’ve spent a fortune on that dress’ – just beautifully turned out.”

In an interview with the Daily Mail Mr Fry claimed Meghan enjoyed the class so much she wanted to come back.

He said: “The younger generation come to us mainly to find out, ‘What should we do, as we are having this social event?’

“The same sort of thing happened with Meghan. She knew she would be having tea with the Queen.”

When Meghan and Harry announced their engagement in November 2017 the bride-to-be revealed she had already met the Queen a couple of times – so the etiquette classes must have paid off.
