Royal ROW: Is this the REAL reason Kate Middleton and Prince William broke up?

The pair had been dating since 2003 at the University of St Andrews and after their graduation Kate moved to London, while William joined the Army. Photographs emerged in the press of William dancing with an unknown blonde woman, according to a documentary. Afterwards, Kate reportedly told him “you can’t have it both ways” and he subsequently broke up with her.

Talking to the documentary ‘Prince William at Thirty’, uploaded to YouTube in June 2012, royal expert Katie Nicholl said: “I don’t think anybody can really blame William.

“I mean, he was part of the Blues and Royals Household Cavalry, known as the ‘Booze and royals’ and he was having a great time.

“Unfortunately, pictures of him on a podium dancing with a pretty blond – they emerged and William looked like he was having far too much fun, certainly to Kate who called the shots and said ‘Well, you can’t have it both ways’.

“And he said ‘Well then, we’re going to take a break’.”

Kate reflected on this time apart during an interview with William after they announced their engagement.

She said while she “wasn’t very happy about it at the time” she thinks it made her “a stronger person”.

She added: “I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you’re younger and I really valued that time for me as well – although I didn’t think it at the time.”

Kate herself endured intense scrutiny during this time in the mid-2000s.

In January 2007, paparazzi waited outside her house on her 25th birthday, prompting warnings of legal action from within Palace walls.

During their break, Kate’s picture was still being splashed over the newspapers, but never once did she speak to the press about her relationship with William.

Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told the documentary: “I think she conducted herself brilliantly when William dumped her, because she had all those headlines and everything, but she just got on with her life.

“She did not make a fool of herself and crucially she did not talk to the press and I think William very soon realised that actually he’d made a bit of a mistake here and went and wooed her back.”

During this time, Kate attended several parties and charity events in London, where she was photographed in “hot pants”.

Royal photographer Kent Gavin said: “I think William must have seen what he was missing.”

In June 2007, William and his brother Harry staged a charity concert in memory of their mother Princess Diana.

Kate attended the event and it is believed this is where they rekindled their relationship.

The documentary described the event at Wembley Stadium as a “catalyst” for their reunion.

Kate and William went on to get married in 2011 and have three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
