Kate is now considered one of the most admired senior royals, and is regularly praised for how she is raising her three children and her dedication to the monarchy. However, early into her life on the royal frontline, Kate was heavily criticised by some members of the public for how she treated George when he was only seven months old. Writing in The Daily Mail, back in March 2014 reporter Valerie Elliott explained that Kate and William had headed off a “second honeymoon” without their firstborn.
She wrote: “The couple have flown to an exclusive resort in the Maldives, leaving their baby with Carole and Michael Middleton – plus his own security detail – at their Berkshire mansion.
“But the decision sparked a storm on social networking sites Mumsnet and Twitter.”
Critics said she and William were being too extravagant, and that it was a bad choice to leave their young son for so long.
Apparently, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge went for a week at Cheval Blanc Randheli on Noonu Atoll.
The Daily Mail claimed packages can cost £6,799 per person, including flights.
Ms Elliot wrote: “One mother, who uses the blog name louloutheshames, posted on Mumsnet: ‘Seriously? Think this might turn public opinion against them . . . seems it’s just one long holiday for the D and D of Cambridge.’”
Other royal watchers pointed out that the trio had just returned from a trip to Mustique a few weeks before to celebrate her mother’s 59th birthday.
William had also gone boar hunting in Spain the previous month — even though he was supposedly in the middle of a ten-week agriculture management course at Cambridge University.
Katienan posted on Mumsnet: “I like them but am shocked by this, just makes me think they are the same old royals… can’t imagine choosing to be so far from my baby for so long.”
However, some did support them and asked: “If the baby is in good hands, why not?”
The couple were also due to go on a three-week tour of New Zealand and Australia the following month, where they did take their son.
Kensington Palace did not comment on the private trip.

However, Kate also received some backlash when she chose to prioritise her children in 2016.
She opted out of the St Patrick’s Day shamrock presentation to the Irish Guards because she felt she had not spent enough time with Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
The yearly tradition has been carried out by a female royal since 1901, so her decision caused waves within the royal community as her husband had to take her place.
She and William were also accused of being “reluctant royals” that same year.
However, the Duke of Cambridge addressed the criticism head-on in a BBC interview.
He told journalist Nicholas Witchell that he was choosing to spend time with his children while he still could, before he was called to perform further duties.
Since Megxit, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had upped their workload and turned any previous backlash on its head.
They have been at the forefront of the Royal Family’s representation during the coronavirus pandemic, too.
